BRUSSELS – BELGIUM
Since 2005, the A.L.I.C.E. Gallery has been defending the kind of transversal culture highlighted on Internet. Without the limits of genre, medium or place of expression, the artists presented here, all share the same aesthetics where the idiom and code of contemporary art are combined with those of some of society’s subcultures.
The Hell’O Monsters Collective
This Belgian group, founded in the late 1990s by Jerome Meynen, François Dieltens and Antoine Detaille, proposes a metaphorical vision of a complex, multicultural society that provokes both inspiration and anxiety. The aesthetic codes shared by these artists are very strict, based on precision of line and graphic leitmotifs, allowing the group identity to take priority over the individual one. Hell’O Monsters is iconoclastic, mixing references from the medieval folklore of “The Dance of Death” with tattooing, techno music, the Memphis Design movement and 17th C. animal etchings.
